Lenin's angry gesture and Stalin's place beside him set this image apart from the other pictures on the board, which show the revolutionary leaders in calmer poses. The caption card gives no date, and the record notes that its data is only partly verified, so the exact occasion is uncertain. The scene likely reflects the sharpening conflict between the two men in the early 1920s, when Lenin, already weakened by illness, clashed with Stalin over Georgia and the policy toward non-Russian nationalities within the Soviet state. Because this is a reproduction of a painting, the work reflects how Soviet artists chose to portray that tension.
