Few details survive about this sheet, but its record places it as number 47 in an album once assembled by a collector, a reminder that many sixteenth-century prints were kept in bound volumes rather than displayed. The technique is what sets it apart. A chiaroscuro woodcut combines a line block with one or more tone blocks, so the figures seem to emerge from shaded grounds in a way a plain engraving cannot. Printmakers in Germany and Italy developed the method in the early 1500s to imitate drawings washed in ink or wash. The pairing of a standing figure with a reclining one reflects the period's interest in the nude as a study of the human body.
