The Grand Coulee Dam spillway, shown here, sits on the Columbia River in central Washington, where the dam was built across a deep basalt gorge. Construction of the dam began in 1933 as the centerpiece of the Columbia Basin Reclamation Project, a federal effort to irrigate the arid Columbia Basin and generate hydroelectric power during the Great Depression. Crews poured enough concrete to make the structure one of the largest of its kind when it was finished, and the spillway was designed to pass floodwater safely around the powerhouses. Its scale still stands out in the image, which captures how engineers sought to tame a wild river for farms and cities across the Northwest.
