Drawn as a full elevation across two plates, this double blowing engine was built by the Glasgow firm James Gray & Co. A blowing engine supplied a steady blast of air to a furnace, and in the 1860s such machines were central to iron smelting, an industry that thrived in Glasgow and across central Scotland. The color lithograph was printed by W.H. McFarlane of Edinburgh and published by Blackie and Son in London in 1862, appearing in *The Engineer and Machinist's Drawing-Book*. The included scale lets viewers judge the machine's true size.
