The subject is Plato, the Athenian philosopher who wrote his ideas as dialogues in which his teacher Socrates usually does the questioning. Born around 428 BCE, he founded the Academy in Athens, one of the earliest organized schools of higher learning in the Western world, and works such as the *Republic* and the *Symposium* shaped Western thought on justice, love and the ideal state. Portraits of him were made centuries after his death, so they reflect later artists' ideas about the thinker more than his actual appearance.
