The parade shown here is a 1921 American Legion march, a procession by a veterans' organization that had been founded only two years earlier, in 1919, by former members of the American Expeditionary Forces after World War I. Legion marches were a visible way for returning servicemen to claim public space and honor their dead, and they drew large crowds in towns across the country. The record does not name the city or route, so the picture is best read as a window onto how quickly veterans' groups became a fixture of American civic life in the early 1920s.
