Troops stand in long, squared-off ranks across an open parade ground, their lines stretching almost to the edge of the wide panoramic frame. Because the camera takes in the whole field at once, the viewer can see how the formation was laid out, with each rank dressed to a straight line and the spacing kept uniform from one end to the other. Parade grounds of this kind were used for drill, inspections and ceremonial reviews, where precise alignment signaled discipline and readiness. Panoramic cameras were well suited to recording such scenes, since a single exposure could capture hundreds of men at once.
