Little Round Top rises above the southern end of the Union line at Gettysburg, and this 1909 panorama shows the rocky, wooded slope that defined the fight there on the second day of the battle, July 2, 1863. Union troops under Colonel Joshua Chamberlain held the summit and its boulder-strewn flanks against repeated Confederate assaults, and the ground's broken stone made every advance slow and costly. Taken forty-six years after the fighting, the view reflects how the battlefield had begun to take on its lasting shape as a memorial landscape, with the trees and rock largely unchanged from the day of the battle.
