Drawn in ink on paper in 1938, this design for the New Penny theater in Boise, Idaho, shows the building as its planners meant it to look before it was built. Neighborhood movie houses like this one were a common sight in American cities in the 1930s, when films offered inexpensive entertainment during the Depression. The crisp linework and hand-lettered notes reflect the drafting methods of the time, when architectural plans were inked by hand. Worth noticing is how the drawing lays out the street front alongside the seating and projection spaces, showing how a small theater had to serve both its neighborhood and its audience.
