Hotel Rennert, shown here in a stereograph dated to about 1896, is a Baltimore hotel view from the decade when stereo cards were a popular parlor entertainment. The card was published by Alfred S. Campbell of Elizabeth, New Jersey, whose numbered views were sold to households that enjoyed seeing distant places through a stereoscope, a viewer that combined two slightly offset photographs into one three-dimensional scene. The caption information is old and unverified, so the exact date and vantage point are best treated as approximate. Even so, the card shows how commercial stereo publishing turned ordinary city buildings into home entertainment.
