Fruit sellers and their stalls were a common sight in Cuban towns during the years of Spanish colonial rule and the early American period, and this print shows the produce itself as its subject. The record gives only a rough date, somewhere between 1895 and 1920, which places it in the years when Cuba moved from the independence wars into a republic shaped heavily by American influence. Markets like this one were the daily center of local trade, where growers brought tropical fruit from nearby farms to sell to households. Photographs of such stalls were often made as views of everyday commerce, so the print offers a useful record of how food was displayed and sold at the time.
