Fire companies marched beside Col. Elmer Ellsworth's Zouaves as they left New York in 1861, a send-off that shows how closely the city's volunteer firemen were tied to the regiment. Many of Ellsworth's recruits came from the fire department, and the regiment's flamboyant zouave-style uniforms drew crowds wherever it went. *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* ran this wood engraving in its May 11, 1861 issue. Ellsworth was killed in Alexandria, Virginia, later that month, one of the first Union officers to die in the war.
