Mist rising from the inner gorges gives this stereograph its title, "Over all broods a solemn stillness," and turns the canyon's depths into something almost unreal. Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, issued the card around 1926, and the company was a major American maker of stereographs. Its paired images were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the layered fog and cliffs a three-dimensional effect. By then the Grand Canyon had been a national park for several years, and views like this one helped carry its scenery to armchair travelers across the country.
