Its headline, "--because somebody talked!", turns a familiar wartime warning into a blunt accusation, and the record's pairing of dogs with war communications sets it apart from the many security posters that show faceless enemy agents. Dated 1943 and credited to an artist named Yegley, it was printed by the U.S. Government Printing Office in 1944 as part of the "loose lips" campaign. That effort asked civilians to keep details of troop movements, ship sailings and war production out of casual conversation, since overheard remarks could reach enemy spies. Posters like this one were displayed in factories, offices and public places, where they reminded people that careless talk could cost lives.
