Narrow aisles of cast-iron stacks rise between the floor and the ceiling here, a construction method that let library builders of the late 1800s fit far more shelving into a room than wood could support. The iron frames carried heavy bound volumes on thin uprights, while open shelving kept the books in view and within easy reach of readers. Libraries of this period often adopted the design to save floor space and to reduce the fire risk that came with timber fittings. Notice the narrow walkways and the rolling ladders, which show how much of a library's work depended on reaching the upper tiers.
