A vaulted ceiling, tall wall-to-wall shelves and a hanging chandelier give this library bookroom its formal, almost churchlike character. Rooms of this type were common in large public and subscription libraries of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when architects borrowed from cathedrals and grand halls to signal that reading and learning deserved a dignified setting. Shelves climbing toward the ceiling were a practical answer to crowded collections, and the chandelier shows that the room was built to be used well after dark. Look closely at the ladders, railings and woodwork, which reveal how patrons reached the upper volumes.
