Rows of tall metal shelving run back into the distance under a line of fluorescent fixtures, a setup that shows how library interiors changed in the mid-twentieth century. Steel stacks replaced heavier wooden bookcases in many American libraries because they were fireproof, could be built in long runs, and let a building hold far more volumes on the same floor. Fluorescent tubes, which spread through public buildings after the 1930s, lit these narrow aisles evenly without the glare and heat of older fixtures. Pictures like this one capture a time when the stacks were the working core of a library, and the patron's reading room was often a separate space entirely.
