The reading room at Billings Library on the University of Vermont campus in Burlington sets this view apart from other library scenes on the board. The building is named for Frederick Billings, the Vermont-born lawyer and railroad executive whose generosity helped the university build its collections and its library hall. Reading rooms of this period were typically long, high-ceilinged spaces with tall shelves and rows of tables, designed so students could study with the books close at hand. The arrangement of furniture and the light from the windows show how campus libraries were planned around quiet, sustained reading.
