This engraving presents George Washington as the figure through whom the young republic is represented, a common approach in patriotic prints of the nineteenth century. J. Rogers cut the plate from a drawing by MacLenan, and the card's subject tags point to January 1777, when Washington's army was active in New Jersey after its winter crossing of the Delaware. A Lossing reference on the card suggests the scene drew on Benson Lossing's popular histories of the Revolution. No date is recorded for the print itself, so it is best read as a later patriotic image of the war rather than a record made at the time.
