The title "Davis Cup" points to the international men's tennis competition that Dwight F. Davis proposed in 1900 as a match between the United States and the British Isles, though the record gives no date and the label itself is unverified. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with pictures, made this glass negative, and its work from the early twentieth century shows how closely the press followed sporting events. Glass plates like this were the standard medium for news photographs of that era, which makes the image a useful record of how such contests were covered.
