Posed as Siegfried, the young hero of Richard Wagner's music dramas, this glass negative shows a singer in one of the most demanding heroic tenor parts in the Ring cycle. In the opera, Siegfried reforges the broken sword Nothung and kills the dragon Fafner, a feat that made the role a test of stamina and stage presence. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, supplied news photographs in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and the sitter's identification rests on the agency's caption information, which is unverified.
