The floor plan here is notable for something architects of libraries often tried to avoid: secondary stairs placed outside the main walls. Rather than sending staff and readers through a central core, the design pushes circulation to the perimeter, which kept the main reading and stack floors open and uninterrupted. Plans like this were typical of library buildings of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when growing collections demanded careful planning for fire safety, daylight and the movement of books between floors. Drawings of this kind show how a building's layout was argued out on paper before construction began.
