A floor plan rather than a photograph, this drawing lays out the main level of a library building, marking the Book Room, the Reading Room and a central Hall. Plans like this were a standard way for architects and building committees to settle how a public library would move visitors, shelving and readers through its space before construction began. The separate Book Room and Reading Room reflect a common arrangement of the period, in which books were stored and checked out in one area while patrons read at tables in another. Looking closely at the room labels and the placement of the Hall shows how the designers meant the building to be used day to day.
