A small rowboat rests on the water beneath steep cliffs in this painted river scene, a subject common in Appalachian landscape art. West Virginia's rivers, including the Kanawha, the Potomac and the New, cut deep gorges through the mountains, and painters of the 19th and early 20th centuries were drawn to these dramatic riverside views. Rivers were also working routes for moving coal, timber and goods, so a boat on the water hints at both the scenery and the everyday life of the region. The artist and date of this work are not known.
