Titled simply "Anti-monopoly," this lithograph pairs the subjects of city life and railroads, and its farm-board placement points to the rural side of that story. It was drawn by O. Kaehler and published by W.W. Bostwick & Co. around 1873, a period when railroads were central to commerce and many people felt that a few large companies set freight rates and controlled access to markets. Farmers in the Midwest, organized in the Granger movement, pressed for state regulation of rail and grain-storage charges, and this kind of graphic commentary helped carry those grievances to a wider public.
