A volunteer firefighter from the Perseverance Hose Company poses for the camera in this salt print, one of the earliest methods for making photographs on paper. Salted paper prints were made in the 1850s, before albumen paper largely replaced them around 1860, and they have a soft, warm tone that sets them apart from later prints. Volunteer hose companies of this period were social clubs as much as working crews, and their members often took pride in their uniforms and equipment. The Library of Congress holds the print in the Marian S. Carson Collection, and it was shown in the 2002 exhibition *American Treasures of the Library of Congress*.
