This half-plate daguerreotype is the only portrait in this group that is identified on the plate itself: a note scratched on the back reads "Halock from NY," which matches the sitter's name, Gerard Hallock (1800-1866). Hallock was a New York newspaperman, best known as an editor of the *Journal of Commerce*, and the record links the plate to Mathew Brady's studio. Daguerreotypes like this one were typically made in the 1840s and 1850s, when a sitter had to hold still for several seconds under studio light. Gold toning, applied to sharpen the image and add warmth, is visible in the surface, and the record also lists alternate spellings of the name, "Halleck" and "Haloc," that researchers should keep in mind.
