A half-length portrait of Ezra Bartlett French, who lived from 1810 to 1880, shows him facing the camera, and the number 119 scratched into the back of the plate helps identify it within its original collection. The image was made in the 1844 to 1860 window, when Mathew Brady's studio was one of the best-known portrait operations in the United States. Daguerreotypes like this one were made on silver-surfaced copper and viewed at an angle, so the sitter appears as a mirror-like image that shifts with the light. The plate later passed through the U.S. War College and entered the Library of Congress in 1920.
