In Milwaukee, try Sanford. It is an excellent, though somewhat expensive restaurant. Written up in Bon Appetit a few years ago. Well worth it.

      Oshkosh: Don't know.

Madison: You picked the best restaurant in the state in L" Etoile.
      It is excellent.

      Milwaukee:

Sanford: The only other great restaurant in Wisconsin.

There are a series of decent restaurants in town. Good, not great.

      Bartollotas, Wauwatosa
Bartollotas, Lake Park (May be the best *looking* restaurant in town)
      Steven Wades, New Berlin
      Eagans, Milwaukee
      Osteria del Mundo, Milwaukee
Martinis, Wauwatosa (not the Milwaukee Martinis...careful)

IMO, the following are overated (albeit very popular), some verging
      on awful:

      Karl Ratsch's, Milwaukee
      Maders, Milwaukee
      Mimmas, Milwaukee

Also, IMO, the best place in town for the money (even if they
      charged *more*) is:

      The Red Rock Cafe, Milwaukee

      Mexican:

Try Amados if you want an informal, tavern-like atmosphere
without the greasy, cheese-baked fare you'll find at
the rest of them (Rudy's, La Fuente, Hectors, etc.)

      Chinese:

      Good luck. They're ALL bad.

      All IMO, of course.

Hmn. A bit hyperbolic, when Christies is clearly the best in Wisconsin.

Yup. There is another nice eating place looking over the lake (forgot the name).

Not bad, although I like Ratsh's

China House or Imperial Palace in Madison are both good.

I've never tried L'Etoile but there is a very nice little restaurant a few miles to the Southeast of Madison, just outside of Stoughton WI (all told about 8-10 miles from Madison) named Luther's. It is located in the basement of an old schoolhouse, only has 10-12 tables. It is simplistically elegant and has a few excellent selections. Entres run $15-25.

Just to the SW of Madison (only about 5 miles out) is Quivey's Grove. It is located on a 19th century farm. They have two restaurants on the premises. The more elegant one is in the farmhouse, the regional-fare ($10- 12 or so) service is in the old barn. I wouldn't call this a great restaurant, but it is good and the setting is very attractive.

For steak you could try Smokey's, which has been rated in the nation's top 10 steakhouses by a couple of publications.

For authentic Swiss you could try out a couple of restaurants in New Glarus (about 25 miles SW). The Chalet Landhaus and Glarner Stube are both nice, but not quite so elegant. The former has an attractive dining area, the latter looks like your typical small town restaurant but has very good food.

We've also got a great New Orlean's eatery, I believe the name is the New Orleans Take Out, on the NE side on Fordem Avenue. Very little atmosphere but great Orlean's food. I've heard raves from native Louisannians. Low cost too. Great place for lunch.
