Well, that's in the eye of the beholder, I guess. My personal favorite based on not too extensive experience is the Third Ward Caffe. Yeh, it's way trendy, but it's really first rate Italian. Expensive by midwest standards ($15-$20 entrees) but great. If you're yuppishly inclined, there is some interesting shopping in the area, too, especially the antique stores.

On a more modest budget, you can get a whole lot of pretty decent food at the Coffee Trader, for not too much money.

German restaurants are a curiosity. Some are worth looking at, but save your actual eating for other places, unless you like sausages and sauerkraut and such.

I'm told that of all the major cities, Milwaukeeans spend the least on clothes and the most on groceries. The restaurants are pretty good, but the bakeries and smaller groceries are excellent. Don't miss Usinger's sausages and Penzey's Spice House.

Be warned that a lot of the interesting features of Milwaukee are closed on Sunday, even including some restaurants.

You want some good food downtown try Egans, Brew City BBQ (if that's your thing), Water Street Brewery (usually good, but have had some problems). All of these are on Water Street about 3-4 blocks north of Wisconsin.

Wells Street Station on Wells just across the Milw. River is good too.

Good German food at Karl Rasch's on Mason or Maders Restaurant. These are more expensive though.

Chinese food can be found at the Szchezuan House on Kilbourn.

If you have a car, you might want to head out west on State St. to Saz's State House (underneath the Hawley Road overpass - just past Miller Brewing). Excellent BBQ. Keep going on State to the Chancery in Downtown Wauwatosa.

Good breakfasts at Heinemann's locations around town. Good pastry at Grebe's. Good sports bar one block south of the Bradley Center at Major Goolsby's

Good Mexican in risky neighborhood? Try Conojito's on Sixth and Virginia.

Can you tell I'm a native Milwaukean who likes to eat out?
