Taqueria el Toucan

I seem to rembember a discussion a while back about good, cheap taco places,
especially those that serve more authentic Mexican stuff. The Taqueria el
Toucan is on NE 55th about a block east of 35th Ave NE, on top of the hill.
It's where Salute used to be before it moved to the corner. They serve dirt
cheap tacos, burritos, etc. that are quite tasty, as well as some slightly
more elaborate dinner plates. I don't think anything is more than $8, with
the tacos being about $1.50 and burritos $3.50. For those looking for tripe
and tongue, they've got it! They also go to the trouble of getting Coke and
Pepsi from Mexico, which tastes about the same but adds a nice authentic
touch. Usually on a Saturday there are one or two groups of Mexicans in
there, which I take as a good sign of authenticity.

Overall, it's a good cheap spot to fill up. I would rate it among the best
of available burritos in the area, right up there with Casa D's and Bimbo's
Bitchin' Burrito Kitchen, although it's different from both of those (more
authentic, perhaps.) This, combined with the fact that it's only a 5-10
minute walk from my house, make it a fairly regular spot for me. I've still
got to try Gordidos (sp?) in Greenwood, I've heard great things.

Forever in search of the perfect burrito,
 -Jeff
