Ajax Cafe

ALZELTSep 13, 1998
Got up this AM, and the weather wonderful again. hopped in the Spider and took
off to Pt. Townsend. didn't realize until i got there that this weekend was the
busiest of the year because of Wooden Boat Fest. no matter. the drive, the
ferry ride, and the quiet, made it all worth while. festival was ok. nothing to
write home about; but was enjoyable being out in the sun.

my goal was to visit the Ajax Cafe for an early dinner before heading back to
Kenmore. for those not familiar, the Ajax is located on Hwy 116 in Port
Hadlock. actually, it is just south of town, coming from Pt. Ludlow. any rate,
the Ajax was known for serious funk. you know what i mean. forks in ceiling,
holding business cards and signed dollar bills. well, turns out there are new
owners now. no more forks, but still eclectic and/or funk. no forks in ceiling,
but business cards and signed dollar bills are under glass on table tops. no to
chairs alike. come to think of it, no two napkins alike, or glasses. need to go
potty. on mens room door, there is pix of JFK. on women's room, pix of MM.
seems only fitting. now for the fun. in the mens room, on all the walls, are
hundreds of ties(already knotted) and many hats. the idea is for the men to put
on a tie and a hat(tam, berret, etc) over t shirt or sweater. as for the women,
they have hundreds of dated hats to choose from. the end result is visually
neat, not to mention topic of conversation.

i got there when they opened at 5PM. they could sit me then, but not later as
they were completey booked because of wooden boat fest. hours are 5-9(S-Th) and
until(wow) 930P on Fri and Sat. the view is great. in an old boatyard. so
plenty of water and boats to see.

as for the food, rather than try to type it all out(liberated a menu), i have
enclosed their web site. complete with directions, history, pix, menus, etc. I
was in a carnivorous mood, so i had the filet mignon. Chargrilled tenderloin
served with cabernet sauce and sun dried tomato butter. very tasty(and tender).
had two glasses of non-descript cabernet. their wine list is on large wine
bottles. sure would be nice if restauranteurs took the time to think through
wine, as well as they do food and ambiance. to me, a good restaurant has some
half bottles of good stuff on their list. oh well. next time, maybe i will
brave the corkage charge, and bring my own. no appetizer, so i braved dessert.
very yum, and rich. lemon tart with blueberries.more like a cheesecake with
lemon covering, and blueberry compote on top. total bill, with tip, and two
glasses of cab and coffee, $38.

for those heading out to the Peninsula, or those just wanting to try something
different for dinner, i would highly recommend it. oh, as promised, here is
 their website: www.olympus.net/ajax
