Fern St. Gourmet, on Burke Center Parkway, in the same shopping center as the Giant. It's actually a gourmet food and wine shop with a small restaurant and wine bar attached. Food and wine selections are excellent. The chef has previously worked in a number of Ritz-Carlton hotels around the world.

We went there for the first time last Friday with friends, and we all loved it. One of our group had the smoked salmon served in black bean sauce, and said it was the most enjoyable salmon dish he'd ever had.

If you are fortunate, the Australian manager (who comes just a few miles down Geelong Rd. from my home town) will let you go next door and pick out a bottle of wine for just a few dollars above retail. Not surprisingly, there is a good selection of Australian wine. We had a bottle of 1989 Parker Coonawarra Terra Rossa first growth, reviewed in the Food section of the Post back in July -- great wine!

We had only two complaints -- they were unable to seat us for some 15 minutes, although we had a reservation, and it was a little on the smoky side. The manager made up for this by giving us complimetary glasses of port after the meal.

If you go, I wager that you won't believe you are eating in Burke!
