Well, if they're not up to anything foreign, even in the name, take them to Western Sizzlin' at Baileys Crossroads--reasonably priced buffet food, nothing fancy.

If they want more adventure, take them to La Choza (Merrifield, but easily accessible from Alexandria) for roast chicken, Ecuadorean style, or possibly some other entree if they want to risk it. From Alex, take Beltway to Rte 50 westbound to Prosperity Ave. northbound to Rte 29 (Lee Hwy.) westbound (1/4 mile from Prosperity in shopping center on N side of street).

For real excitement without palate damage, try Cha Gio (Vietnamese) near Falls Church--most entrees $4.75-$7. Order the rice dishes with grilled meats (e.g., grilled lime chicken, grilled pork/beef) under the heading "Com" ("Rice") to get something any Westerner would find easy to like. From Alex, take Beltway to Rte 50 eastbound, left at second light onto north frontage road of 50 to shopping center at end (at Graham Rd.). Try the iced coffee (ca phe' su da). The spring rolls (cha gio) are so good, the restaurant is named for them.

If its a monday, tuesday or wednesday, you could take them to Casablanca on King St. near the washington mason memorial. The special those nights is complete dinner for 10 bucks and comes with everything (incl. dessert) except for booze. Its Morrocan food which is a bit strange for some, but the ingredients are recognizable. I'm not sure if the Belly dancer still works during the week.

By the way, I'd recommend this special to all of you. Its good food and a great value for the money.

Well, IMHO, The Ultimate Hamburger/Fries_To_Be_Had_In_Arlington/Alexandria are made by "5 Guys". The Post happens to agree there.. It's all take-out, and two bacon cheeseburgers w/ the woiks, 2 large fries, and 2 med. sodas ran me +- $12. I generally go there once or twice a week. They have 2 places- both off of Walter Reed Ave; 1 is at the intersection of Columbia Pike and Walter Reed (this is actually Arlington) and the other is up by NOVA. (um, the intersection where the First Union bank is, and NOVA Bikes. Same complex as the bike shop. It looks like a hole in the wall, but they have The Best Hamburgers Around.
