"I'm wondering if someone can recommend an American, French or Italian restaurant in the $10-20 range (for entrees). I'm going to be in D.C. in mid-February, and would like to find an interesting restaurant where my son (22 years old), some friends and I can celebrate my birthday. So far Paolo's in Georgetown sounds good--highly recommended by the Let's Go guide to Wash. D.C. Any comments on Paolo's, or can you recommend another restaurant instead? I'll be staying in a downtown hotel. Thanks!"

I am partial to Al Tiramisu, a mid-range Tuscan restuarant on P Street, near Dupont Circle. Very good fish dishes, wonderful appetizers, great tiramisu (as you might expect), but their panacotta is even better. Among my favorites are the tuna carpaccio and the veal stew. Gnocchi are good, but they give you enough to serve your whole family. Good, and not pricey, wines. Yes, you can find other restaurants that do individual items better, but not at these prices! And, if you can speak even a little Italian, Luigi, the owner, will adopt you. (You might have someone casually mention that it's your birthday, and see how the staff reacts. In my case, it was a serving of tiramisu with a candle in it.) Call (202) 467-4466 for reservations. Buon appetito!

A few D.C. suggestions in your price range.

Cashion's Eat Place on Columbia Road in Adams-Morgan. Creative American cookery.

Veneziano on 18th Street in Adams-Morgan: Moderately priced Italian...

Il Matti also on 18th Street: A good Italian trattoria.

Let me also recommend a Middle Eastern restaurant which is one of my favorites--Skewer's on 17th and P NW near Dupont Circle. Consistently excellent.

For a few bucks more, you can go to my absolute favorite place in DC: Kinkead's. Seafood specialities and it is in your price range at lunch.

Enjoy.

Well Bob, nice name, the best place for real Q in
the area you named is a place called Babba's,

Although we live in the Baltimore area, our all-time favorite trattoria is Amalfi's on Wilkens Ave. in Rockville. If you're driving, it is off of Rockville Pike (Wisconsin Ave.) at Randolph Road, about 2 miles above the Washington Beltway. The appetizers are teriffic, especially the white beans and fried zucchini slices (no residual grease and paper thin slices). The white pizza is fantastic and words can't describe the home-made bread that comes warm from the oven. All of the entrees that we've tried have been great and most fall in the $9.00-12.00 range. Portions are large enough for at least two to share. I guess my tastes are pedestrian but my favorite is their veal parmesan--a bargain, with home-made pasta, at $11.00.

Writing this post is making me hungry, I think we'll mosey over there for dinner this evening!

Hope you get to try it.
