We were just in Williamsburg over Spring Break, and DID eat at Trellis with our kids - everything went fine (our kids are used to eating in Trellis-like restaurants, especially on vacation), but I know what you mean: it is an upscale, restaurant, very good, and reasonably expensive.

We recommend eating maybe one meal in the historic district restaurants. In general, altho they are good with kids, the meals are overpriced, and under-"qualitied", programmed-style service, etc. Lunches may be better than dinners.

You should try to eat at least a breakfast at the Williamsburg Inn - my wife and I had dinner there (alone) several years ago, and this time (with the family) we had breakfast there: high-class, twenties-thirties style luxury atmosphere.

"Reasonable?" Depends on your pocketbook.

I like La Yaca which offers fixe price menus. A little high, but you can choose the number of courses and the entree, and that fixes your price.

The Trellis is one of everyone's favorites. The Whaling Company is one of those franchise restaurants, but it has a good atmosphere and the food is fine. In Merchants Square, try the sandwiches at the Wine and Cheese shop.

For a touristy, but good experience, try one of the taverns on the historic mall, if you can get a reservation.
