I have been there three times in the last five years. IT IS OUTSTADING. It is the only 3 star Michelin restaurant in London and worth every star and I'm afraid every penny/cent/pound/dollar (yes I live in London). It will cost you between 45 - 150 pounds per person depending on how much you delve into their superb wine list. Menus change but I can recommend the duck served in four ways, the lamb is always strong and the cheeses are first class. The famous dish is stuffed pigs trotters (stuffed with sweetbreads). This sounds vile but tastes great. All the desserts are strong and the dull sounding Melange of Sorbet is served in a spherical basket of spun caramel and is terrific.

You will need to book well in advance but you will have a wonderful time. I hope you manage to get there you'll like it.

Rob, in my opinion Tante Claire is one of the two best restaurants in London. It is French, with an orientation toward SW France, Pierre Koffmans home, i.e. foie gras, confit etc. It is VERY expensive, allow UKL 100 per person in the evening. Suggest you go for lunch when there is a menu for UKL 25 which I think is very good. Look for wines from SW France for the best value.

I have eaten there at least once every year since 1979.

My other 'favourite' is Bibendum on Fulham Road. It's eclectic in style, also v. expensive, also better value at lunch.

I do know whereof I speak since I own one of the most highly rated restaurants in England, Gidleigh Park in Devon.

Let's widen this one out somewhat. A few years ago, just round the corner, there were two restaurants. One was Redmonds, who grew, went on to get one Michelin star, and ((sadly) collapsed. The other is David Everett Mathis' Le Champignon Suavage (champion sausage, or wild mushroom) which has just won its star. I do not claim credit for this, but Cheltenahm should be a Mecca for (good) foodies. Merely avoid rip-offs like the Epicurean and Gold Cup Week. Nearby, in the Cotswolds (open the year round) are Oakes (for sale?), the Old Woolhouse, and Wickens. I'm sure Paul could name many others. London is not England. And in Wales, you visit Way on High (capital of previously-owned book shops), and the Walnut Tree, to learn about Italian Food and Wine in the most pleasant way imaginable. Enough.
