Indian food in London

Everybody raves about the Red Fort, but I have never been. Bombay Brasserie at the Goucester Road tube is very good, especially if you are entertaining others. The service and decor are exactly what you'd extect from a great restaurant in a well-run hotel.

But, I love a place called Red Peppers, near Holburn tube. I think it is on Red Lion Street. Very good food, the right decor, exceptionally friendly service. I lived in London for two years three years ago and was introduced to it then. When I went back recently on holiday, I went twice!

You might try Chutney Mary's on Kings Road very near Chelsea Harbour. They serve Indian food using recipes that the Indians served to the British stationed there. Very good and very unusualÅ

I've told several people about the canteen on the top floor of India House in London which used to serve wonderful Indian-style "home cooking" primarily for Indian students in London. The prices were incredable - a few pence for a meal as I recall.

I haven't heard back from anyone as to whether or not this place still exists and, if so, is it still open to the public? I would be interested in knowing.

I first discovered it from Arthur Frommer's "Europe on $5 a day", which tells you how long ago this was.

Cheers,

When I was in Edinburgh two years ago, we had the best dinner at a place called Pinnochio's. It was Italian food, I don't remember if any of the dishes were vegetarian, but they were great. And being from the US, I thought it was great that they actually made iced tea for us.

Try Jacksons, 209 High St, Royal Mile Tel 225 1793. Basement restaurant, always busy, great food, not too pricy. Must book.

Kalpna, Nicholson Street, Opposite St Patrick's Square. Near the Odeon.

Was very good, but may have gone downhill according to the last report I have.
