It really depends on what you enjoy in a meal.

To get a bit of that Austin spirit, try Chuy's on Barton Springs (New Mexican-ish Tex-Mex in a funky setting), Castle Hill Cafe (Casual upscale dining), Shoreline Grill (the balcony is a great place to watch Austin's bats begin their nightly journey), or Manuel's (Mexican in a chic setting.)

If it's a beautiful, sunny day, and you like outdoor dining, check out The Oasis (Burgers/chicken/etc.). The buzz on their food had been bad for a very long time, but a recent visit surprised me with a meal that, while not fancy, was nothing to avoid. Another outdoor favorite is the Hula Hut, at the end of Lake Austin Blvd (Seafood/Polynesian/Tex-Mex, owned by Chuy's).

Tex-Mex food is an essential part of Austin.

Cisco's Bakery for Mexican on E. 6th for Mexican breakfast. Cisco's was one of Lyndon Johnson's favorite restaurants, and the walls ar adorned with pictures of famous "people who have known me" (the humor of recently deceased founder Rudy Cisneros). An Austin institution going back almost 40 years. Order the migas with fajita.. ask for the green sauce. Just about the only restaurant I've ever made a trip to just for refried beans.

Evita's on S. 1st has just about the best salsas around... 6 of them served at your table. Wonderful fajitas. Get the lime rise and borracho beans.

Guero's on S. Congress... Bill Clinton ate here in '95. Cheese enchiladas, achiote chicken, marinated onions from the salsa bar, great margaritas.

Check who's playing at Stubb's BBQ. Decent food, often fantastic local music.

Someone mentioned Oasis (great views, way overpriced, mediocre food), Chuy's (tastefully tacky, mediocre chow, bad margaritas), County Line (barely mediocre food)... imho, all three are barely acceptable places to eat.
