On your recommendation, and because we were just driving by, we stopped at Tocai. The only thing I remembered from your review was that you liked the calamari and the tiramisu. On Sunday night, when we went, the place was nearly totally empty so we had no trouble finding a table.
The calamari was indeed excellent. It was oily, but nicely spiced and not chewy. It was delicious.
The bread was unremarkable.
I had the Caldera, a Portugeese seafood and sausage soup. Wonderful. The salmon was great, and the squid was cooked just right.
My wife had the Beef Tenderloin. The beef was unremarkable, but then, it isn't a remarkable dish. However, the horseradish mashed potatoes was great.
In both dishes, we thought the vegetables was fantastic.
For dessert my wife had Zabaglione (strawberries on Italian custard) and I had the tiramisu (my original reason for going). I doubt I will try any of the other desserts there. I didn't care for the Zabaglione since it just tasted like custard.
The bill for two was $50. That's with no wine, so it's not a cheap place by any means. But, it's definitely on my list of restaurants to go back to again.

I eat out a lot, mostly at the city's best restaurants, and I guarantee that Tocai is the best deal in town for the quality of food. So please enjoy it and tell your friends -- and keep a deserving restaurant in business! (No, I'm not related to anyone there or paid by them to write this. I'm just mightily impressed by what they offer, and astounded to see empty tables whenever I drive by.) Emily

Subtract two desserts and the appetizer, and it comes to $30-$35 for two dinners without salad. They are, however, worth the money. rajat
