The Mexican restaurant closest to what you describe is probably La Calesa, a restaurant of the Mexican (as opposed to TexMex, or the blending of Mexican and Anglo/German cooking, cooking common to Texas) school that is run by a family who settled here a few years ago. It is the only restaurant I know of that has a few Yucatecan dishes, and all of what they offer has a patina of authenticity that other restaurants lack. It is on Hildebrand a door or two east of Broadway. As for barbecue, that is a little harder -- there are many many simple convincing genuine barbecue places, but none is clearly better than others. Maybe Bob's on Ribsby, but it is so basic that you may find it more than you bargained for. Their location on Fredericksburg Road has a few more amenities, but is kind of far from downtown.
