I had dinner this evening at Emperor Garden, and was positively impressed. They have Korean and Chinese sections on the menu, but we only ordered from the Korean section. We had Bul Go Gi, and a goat meat dish whose name I don't recall. The Bul Go Gi was a fine rendition, served on a heated cast iron platter (a la fajitas). The goat dish turned out to be similar to Bul Go Gi, in terms of being sliced meat with vegetables, and not much sauce; it had a sauce you could apply yourself, which was mainly salty rather than spicy (which appeared to be the intended effect). The meal came with about a dozen condiment dishes, including tiny dried sardines -- one of my favorites. The waitress was attentive, and helpful in understanding the menu. In one case, an ingredient name was translated with a Latin term; she described the item as "a kind of radish". In another case, "crob" turned out to be a misspelling of "crab". Emperor Garden is on Lamar at Rutland (in the same center as "Cowboy" nite club). It hasn't replaced Seoul Sushi as my favorite Korean restaurant in Austin, but it is a shorter drive on the freeway. I plan to go back sometime soon for lunch, as I noticed some dishes on the lunch menu that weren't on the dinner menu, such as Squid Bul Go Gi. Cheers, Janet

Review: Emperor Garden (Korean)

I have seen a number of Korean joints come and go in Austin (remember Ichiban before the menu got Japanese?? I was frantic!) but I always come back to Korea House. The food is fresh, plentiful, well-priced and very tasty. The bulgogi and jab chae can be a little greasy, but the sushi and soups are lovely. The duk kuk is quite nice. And the service is so friendly. Just a short walk to the Village for a movie. Think I'll go now... Ben
