The AAS ran a review today of the Kirby Lane Cafe on 183 N. They liked it. They ate lunch there. I used to eat at Kirby Lane on S Lamar and it was always great. The one near Seaton was generally good. The one on 183 N was a real turn off. When they first opened they were OK but after a year they had gone way way downhill. The repeated problems were:

1. Some of the waiters were real duds.
2. The coffee tasted like dishwater or dishwasher chemicals. kind of bromine like.
3. The Pancakes were sometimes raw and sometimes burnt. There were frequently charred on the outside and raw in the middle
4. The eggs were always cold and rubbery.

Maybe things have changed lately but I doubt it. We go back about once a year. I really don't know why.

I haven't read the review yet but:

We usually end up at 183's Kirby Lane because it's the closest late night restaurant to us. While I'll agree that most of the waitstaff are real duds, we've not had your trouble with the pancakes or eggs. Used to be their fried potatoes were bad but that's improved too. We usually get migas, omlettes, or sandwiches. Everybody we know likes the migas.

The real problem with the place, as far as I'm concerned, is that is feels kinda dirty in there. That yucky carpet, banged up dirty walls, and in one corner due to rotten window sills - a bad smell. They spent time and money making a patio, why not spent it on the interior instead?

On the plus side, it's a good place for kids. Simple, basic menu for them and they like to color the kid's menu that changes pictures drawn from the local elementary schools.

Worse than that, if the cleanliness of the bathroom is any indication of the cleanliness of the kitchen -- STAY AWAY from Kerbey Lane North.

My experiences basically match yours. The one downtown is usually good; the one on 183 is usually bad; in both quality of food and quality of service.

I agree. The staff has an attitude problem and the food is mediocre or less.

That's close.

Jim's is actually a couple of blocks north of that intersection. It's on the north side of 183.

I used to work on Rutland just east of Burnet. I went to Jim's pretty regular.

If my memory serves me correctly, Jim started off with a rinky-dink hamburger stand. I can't remember if that was in Austin or San Antone.

He turned a rinky-dink operation into a full-blown business. I don't know if he is still living or not. If so, he is getting along in age.

As for the food - just plain fare - chicken-fried steak, etc. It's pretty good for the type of service he offers. I wouldn't take anyone there to entertain them.

It's great for working lunches though.
