I was there the other day and it smelled fantastic, but what I actually ate (brisket sandwich) was disappointing. Went back upstairs again and something still smelled good. I'd love to eat something that actually tasted like that.

You definitely need to try Elgin's best barbecue... that would be Crosstown Barbecue. You won't find sauce that is sissy... it's made up of chili seasoning and dill pickle juice... This place took a four star rating in the Austin Statesman and they still have the clipping framed on the wall. Laren is the owner and will treat you right. Ed

Crosstown's barbecue is among the best in the business.

The REAL beauty about Crosstown is its informality.

Patrons don't need to wear tuxedos and evening gowns or cocktail dresses.

Casual dress is perfectly acceptable.

Crosstown is not on US290 like Meyers and Southside.

It is on the southside of the railroad tracks across the tracks from Elgin's main business district.

Southside used to be near where Crosstown is now.

I ate at 5 Star BBQ on Bee Cave Rd yesterday at lunch. The WORST I have had at a restaurant where BBQ is a specialty. Stale cold bun, with thick sliced dry brisket and sauce on the side. The sauce was OK and the Shiner Bock was good. Total cost $6.02.

Service, well there is none. You order from the counter and they call your name. There were two people in front of me and it took 12 minutes to order. There were two people taking orders, one of them was on the phone and when he got off, he never offered to take my order. So I just waited. This was at 12:15 pm. It is a rather large place, quite quaint with tables in and out. Very empty considering it was lunch time. Not a sorry for the wait, thanks for the order or anything.

It is a great little location, I hope it will eventually get someone to run it that knows a little about BBQ, or the restaurant business in general. Just a little politeness and customer appreciation would be a start. I really hate writing negative things about small businesses trying to survive. But really sorry BBQ in Texas or Austin is kind of disgusting.

PS I am going to post only one other negative experience this week. I am very tired of the lack of customer appreciation from businesses where I spend my money. My mission is to make it known that we the public don't like it and WE AIN'T TAKING IT ANYMORE!!

5 Star is open again? I recall that it closed down a while back. While I wouldn't say it was the worst I've had, I wouldn't recommend it either. As for service, I've been there at 1:30 and they had completely run out everything. Its happened several times. BTW, the Popeye's Fried Chicken place in the same strip mall serves wimpy spicy chicken.

The 5 Star BBQ, before it closed down, wasn't worth the trip, and now that it's open "Under new Management", it's even less worth the trip ( and I only have about a mile or so to drive for lunch). Ate an expensive lunch there several months ago, and was not at all pleased. The brisket was dry, and the portions small for the money. I'm definitely not going back.
