I'd say that the best Italian, hands down, in Austin is Pavarotti over at Anderson and roughly Shoal Creek (just off MoPac, really). It used to be Cafe DiRoma over at 290 and 35, but the owner moved for some reason. Pretty much everything I've had over there is fantastic, and I've been going to Cafe DiRoma/Pavarotti for about 8 years now. Yowza . . . I'd have to disagree, based on my experiences at Cafe DiRoma. I would have put them in the bottom third of Italian restaurants that aspire to be in Austin's upper echelon. Maybe Pavarotti is different, but in my opinion, Cafe Di Roma was smoked in virtually all categories (food, atmosphere, service, wine list, value) by any number of restaurants in town, including Basil's, Mezzaluna, Tocai, Madam Nadalini's, Carmelo's. Oh well . . . I'll give it a try someday soon. Maybe they've improved a lot (or maybe Scot and I look for different things in an Italian restaurant). jim andrews
I went to Pavarotti's once and was underwhelmed. Had spaghetti carbonara, and the sauce tasted exactly like Campbell's cream of mushroom soup. We liked the service and atmosphere, and the desserts were okay, but the carbonara was such a bummer that I'm not gonna give them a second chance-
I'll second ya on Francesca's, as a Boston native myself. I'm trying to remember the other places I liked in the North End-- we went to the old Daily Catch a lot for black squid pasta, and ate a lot of pizzas at the orginal Reginas (and at Santarpio's in East Boston)...
