I gave a restaurant review for hallowe'en night along with a proposal and acceptance announcement. But thanks for asking. 8-) We are considering running off to the US Virgin Islands to do the deed. Anyone been there ? ObFood: I went back for a second try of Sarovar, the indian restaurant on Burnet north of Steck. I had tried once in the first few weeks of operation and has given the food a thumbs up and the service a thumbs down. This time around we were happier. The food is still good. There is now more than one waitperson for the whole restaurant. Our order was taken fairly quickly and the food arrived promptly. Can't say the 5 tables who were seated straight after us would have the same glowing report. We were licking our fingers at the end of the meal while others still were just starting on their appetizers. After waiting too long for the check, we went up to the front desk and paid there. So it's getting better, but still has a way to go in my mind. For food we had a incredibly tender chicken and spinach curry and a shrimp hot curry that could have been hotter. The garlic nan and the sweet lassi were great. The burnt pappadums were replaced, but I think their oil needs replacing too. They had no mango pickle or mango chutney 8-(. I'd be interested in someone (rajat ?) telling us about the southern indian options available there. There seemed to be a lot of pancake type dishes that sounded interesting, but there were so many to choose from, and scant info in the menu, that I'd like some suggestions. Try the Idli and Masala Dosa combo. These are South Indian specialities, breakfast food actually, and are done quite well at Sarovar. They are the primary reason I go to Sarovar. That comes with a white coconut sauce and Sambar (soup). If you like that, you should then try the other dosas. A dosa is a rice crepe folded over filling. The filling for Masala Dosa is a mildly spicy potato and onion stuffing. Idli is a white rice ball and worth trying. Uttapam is also something I like, although I don't have it very often and don't know how to describe accurately (a large pancake with onions, etc.?). The Malai Kofta is really good. The Spinach chicken, which you had, is one of our favorites (Ulla loves spinach). If you like Naan, you might try the Aloo Paratha or Gobi Paratha. These are breads from Punjab, stuffed with potatoes (Aloo) or cauliflower (gobi). These are not non-fattening. For dessert, try kulfi, if you haven't already. We have found that you have to ask the waiter for the food to be made spicy and hot. Insist on it. I agree with you that they have got to improve their service. rajat
Thanks to everyone who responded. I choose Carmelo's. The evening was a great success. The only hitch was the Valet parking was full when we got there. I went in, got the manager and he had them open it up for us. The food was fantastic. The service supreme. The atmosphere perfect for the occasion. I spent a little more than I anticipated, but she is worth it at twice the price. My special thanks go to the manager Renee Garcia and to our fantastic waiter Jon. Go by and ask for him. He is trying to get through law school. We are going to have our rehearsal dinner there in September!!!

What's the price range? We ate at Sarovar for the first time last night. The tandoori chicken was the best I've had in Austin. The Sarovar Special chicken was outstanding as well, likewise the samosas. Full dinners, soup to dessert, were about $9-15 depending on the entree. We saw a buffet table near the kitchen, so presumably they do that at lunch.

It's the only place that serves South Indian dishes like dosas, idlis, etc. The vegetable dishes are good (especially the Malai Kofta), and the chicken tandoori (a Northern dish) is very good. Dinner entrees (a la carte) run around $10 or less. There is a lunch buffet for, I think, $7.00 per person. Service, unfortunately, does need improvement; while they're not rude, you will sometimes have to be quite forthright about flagging a waiter down. I recommend trying the Masala Dosa. It's a large rice crepe wrapped around potato, onion filling. It's customarily a breakfast dish, and nearly a meal in itself. Makes for a good appetizer for two. rajat
