I'll take El Mercado on S. 1st over Chuy's any day.

I'm afraid I have to second the sentiment. Shaggy's used to be pretty good food at really cheap prices. You used to get an entire plate of hot jerked wings for under $5, but now you only get about half what they used to serve, and the entrees seem to have undergone similar downsizing/up-pricing. The service was pretty bad the last time I was there as well. A pity.

I know of three South Austin restaurants I'd _have_ to make the trip for if
I lived north:

Java Noodles for Indonesian
La Reyna for Mexican
Hoody's for Cajun

Only Hoody's (oyster sub... yummm) is in Oak Hill, though La Reyna is only a short drive ( I can have an exact odometer reading for you by tomorrow. :-)

I'd delete Chuy's from the list and add Hoody's Subs in Oak Hill.

I also like Artz Rib House on S. Lamar

The South Congress location of Arandas

Polvos on S. 1st

Java Noodles

Rosie's Tamale House (mostly for sentimental reasons, i admit)

Have you been to Shaggy's lately? I loved that place when I was there a year or so ago, but we went back a couple of months ago after their "renovation" and we were very disappointed. The menu was cut way back. The really great things like the jerk chicken dinner and the coconut fried shrimp had been replaced by hamburgers.
