Listers,

Hi! My name's Drew and since I'm new to this newsgroup, I thought that I'd introduce myself and give a restaurant review...

I've been in Austin about three years, and have sampled many of the fine eating establishments around town. If you want to eat out, Austin is the place!

I ate at the Sea Dragon last night, at 183 and Peyton Gin. While a little expensive, the food was excellent.

We had Clams with Black Bean sauce, which was very fresh and tender, Chinese Spinach (another good one), General's Chicken, which was very good and I can compare it favorably to Suzi's, and the most expensive dish, Lobster with scallions, onions, and garlic. This was lightly battered, deep fried, and then sautéed in the onions and scallions. What a treat! Not like you normal Lobster Tail, I tell you. The whole thing (two lobsters, in fact) came out in 10 or 12 pieces, head, legs, and all! I was taken aback for a moment, the the meat was very sweet and tender.

The entire bill was $90! But the food was good. We just didn't know what we were getting into...they gave us much more lobster than we thought we ordered. I'll go back, once I get paid again!

By the way, if anyone can respond to my previous post "German and Fondue" I would be most appreciative!

Been there twice now, and was totally underwhelmed. I am a fan of "spicy"
food(s), and found *nothing* there to wipe my brow over. <grin>

That said, we (my wife and I) were favorably impressed by the cleanliness of the place, and the promptness of the servers. But would rather go on south to the intersection of Anderson Ln. and 183, to the Buffet Palace. Not as clean looking(smelling), but a much better selection of different dishes IMNSHO.

Later...

been there, done that. since 1985 (or there-abouts)!
Learned to appreciate Vietnamese cooking there, when they were still
in that tiny place in the strip mall in front of where they are now,
still have my own menu somewhere where I check-marked each dish as
I ate my way down the list of what they offered...

just as their spin-off Twin Dragon, I never learned to appreciate
their becoming "a real restaurant" (with a Chinese menu) and worried
that the expansion would lead to a quick (or eventual) failure.
I'm glad they're both still around, but I miss the mom-and-pop
atmosphere they once had, and moved on to Saigon Kitchen, then Dong
Phuong, and now am delighted every time I eat at Tam (at 8222 N Lamar)
Seeing that us Round Eyes are usually outnumbered there, I feel
confirmed in my preference! oh, tomorrow it Friday, a TAM-day! :-)

Sea Dragon (both locations) is my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in Austin and I've eaten at quite a few. They have a nice vegetarian selection too, if that matters to you. The best Chinese restaurant I eat at is Veggie Heaven. My second favorite is Wok and Roll.

We've tried it 3 times, since it's convenient. If you get there around the time the dinner buffet starts, it's pretty good (as buffets go).

If you're late, the food tends to be soggy, rubbery, or cold and fairly awful. Too large batches made for too few people sitting too long in steam trays.
