For a one-of-a-kind TexMex experience (actually few-of-a-kind as they have several locations!) check out Chuy's. It's crowded, it's loud and it has an Elvis shrine.

Killer slushy margaritas. The chile rellenos are sine qua non...I don't eat rellenos anywhere else cuz Chuy's are so good. Killer sauces and salsa ...wonderfully thin tortilla chips. The original location is on Barton Springs, and is my choice if I'm only gonna hit one while I'm in town.

The same company runs Shady Grove right down the street. Set in a trailer park, the food leans much more towards the Tex side. Great stuff...the tortilla crusted catfish with queso rocks as do the cheese fries with chile verde. You cannot go wrong with either place.

They have another spot on the water, but I'm having a memory lapse as to the name...something Boathouse or something like that. Slightly toned down from Chuy's atmosphere with yet again a great menu.

For a true Texas pig-out experience you might want to check out County Line BBQ. They have 2 locations, I prefer the one on the lake. If you've got a hungry group the all-you-can-eat deals are great and the Q is way better than average. If you've never had Texas Q you should definitely experience BBQ brisket at least once in your life. For a quick lunch check out Ruby's...their sauce is not quite to my taste, but their organic beef is the butteriest brisket I've ever had. MMmmmmm...

Lastly, if you want a more upscale experience try Bertram's. Miguel Ravago is arguably one of the best chefs in Austin.

These are only a few of many places I enjoy...Austin is a great eating town!

Lemme know where ya go!

I agree the atmosphere at Chuy's is great, but if you had to choose one restaurant in Austin, it would definately be Fonda San Miguel. It is more interior Mexican food and upscale. The higher price is worth the experience. My suggestion is the Sunday brunch. It is absolutely fabulous. Call ahead for reservations because the brunch times fill up fast. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu, but the chicken with mole', rice, and bananas is my favorite.

As was mentioned earlier, Austin is a great town for eating. Let me know fi you are going to be in town longer and I can send you more suggestions.

Yum!!!! Fonda San Miguel!!!! They have a URL complete with menu, directions, hours, etc. When we ate there (with a big crowd of people) a friend sitting next to me ordered an appetizer called Cazuealita De Chorizos and was kind enough to share. It's cheese and chorizo (spicy Mexican sausage) on a tortilla.

For Tex-Mex... Try Nuevo Leon on East 7th street. good food. Also El Azteca on the same street.

Sorry, but I will never go to Fonda San Miguel again. The place is not what it used to be now that Miguel Ravago (now at Bertram's) is gone. Sunday brunch at Fonda was one of the meals I made a point of enjoying each and every trip. My last visit, the first one post-Miguel was a huge letdown.
