"old hippy/ultra gourmets" Hmmm. Hitting a bit too close to home.
I just returned from Providence. Be prepared for food price sticker
shock. Having said that, here's are some places I ate:

Bluepoint oyster bar. Superb, tiny little place. Excellent
fresh oysters, a half dozen variety or more. Great fish,
pasta. Average desserts. Bluepoint is reputed to have one
of the very best (and expensive) wine lists in the country,
many by the glass. Very casual, VERY expensive.

Angels. Just down the street from Bluepoint. Good. Pastas,
fish, etc. Excellent choice of wines by the glass, but much
smaller list than Bluepoint. Casual, VERY expensive.

Al Forno. This is among the Zagat top rated restaurants in
the city, which just goes to show that a 27 in one city is
not a 27 in another. Italian. I found the food ordinary at
		best. Expensive.

Of these three, I could see returning to Bluepoint. It is
a very good restaurant. Only the crazy prices kept me from
		going back.

There are supposed to be many superb Italian restaurants
in (on?) Federal Hill, and the area around Brown should
do well to bring out the "old hippy" side.
